In response to the terrible suffering of the people of Haiti, Australia provided $10 million for emergency humanitarian assistance including food and medical services for displaced persons and pledged $5 million toward the long-term job of reconstruction. When Haiti was hit by an earthquake on 12January, Australia was one of the first countries to offer support. The epicentre was near Léogâne, 25kms west of Haiti's capital, Port-au-Prince. The objective of the project is to improve the security of two bridges over the National Road One and its bypass Route Neuve which are the main access roads to the northern and central region of the country, by replacing the existing bridges.
